日本語のテスト

SAT Japanese

試験は一時間、2006年は11/4（土）に行われます。registrationの締め切りは9/29 、listeningつきなのでbasic registration ($18)に加えて$19かかります。

問題のサンプルはこのPDFの62-65ページにあります（SATのサイトに登録が必要）。過去の問題集は、サンフランシスコ公立図書館で借りられるそうです。

日本語能力試験

2003、2004年度の問題のサンプルははここで見ることができます。市販の問題集も出ていて、紀伊国屋等で買うことができます。

2006年は12/3（日）、会場はSan Francisco State University、Level1-4すべてが12:30からです。

registrationは8/1から10/6まで。費用は

Level 4 - $40.00 (the beginning level)

Level 3 - $40.00

Level 2 - $50.00

Level 1 - $50.00 (the most proficient level)

AP Japanese

来年の試験は5/10（木）、費用は科目につき$83。

AP Japaneseの内容はこのPDFにあり、試験問題のサンプルは13-27ページです。これによると試験は約３時間、Internet-Based Test (iBT)のテストで、一人一人コンピューターを使い、読み、書き、聞き（ヘッドフォーン）、話（マイク）の四つの要素すべてを見ます。内容の配分は理解力(50%)、会話力(25%)、発表の力(25%)。当然過去問はありません。

Quick Reference for Counselorsをご覧下さい。p.5-8にLanguage Other Than Englishについてのeligibilityの決まりがあります。p.5には

Language Other Than English (“e”): The minimum performance objectives of two years of high school study of the same language other than English should include:
· The ability to sustain a brief conversation on simple everyday topics, demonstrating good use of the whole sound system (and pronunciation) and of the basic structural patterns in past, present and future tenses, subjunctive and commands;
· The ability to summarize, orally and in writing, the main points of a relatively simple reading passage not involving specialized vocabulary.

Emphasis should not be on the ability to describe grammatical features of the language.

Generally, a bilingual student is considered to have met the “e” requirement and may choose not to enroll in courses in a language other than English. Such students may be better served by enrolling in additional electives or, if their English is limited, English as a Second Language. Students who elect not to take courses in a language other than English must satisfy the “e” requirement by one of the methods listed on page 7 or document competence in a language other than English as explained on page 8.

とあります。つまり、bilingualであることが証明できれば高校で外国語のクラスをとらなくてよい訳です。

p.7の表を見ると、外国語の勉強を高校で2-3年間する代わりに、SATのJapanese With Listeningで510点以上取ること、またはAP Japaneseで３、４、５の成績を取ることで済ますことができるようです。

更に、p.8の下の表にその他の可能性についてものっています。例えば、６年生以降２年間以上日本の学校へ行っていた場合、その成績でeligibilityを満たすことができます。また、所属高校のPrincipalからcertificationを得るという方法もあります。ですから、補習校の授業内容についての資料を事務局からとりよせ、Principalにかけあって単位と成績を得られればGPAの一部になり、UCのeligibilityを満たせます。

SATの場合には二つ以上Subject Testを取った場合、そのうち違うsubject areaである限り成績の良い二つを選ぶことができます（リンク ）。一方、学部によってはSubject Testに外国語以外の科目を推奨しているところもあります。

AP Japaneseは今年初めですが、UCでは認知されました(Jeanne Hargrove, Office of the President)。College BoardはAPのすべてのテストの結果を大学へ報告しますが、
"The University grants credit for all College Board Advanced Placement Tests on which a student scores 3 or higher. The credit may be subject credit, graduation credit or credit toward general education or breadth requirements, as determined by evaluators at each campus. Students should be encouraged to take AP tests when appropriate. AP test scores will not adversely affect a student’s chances for admission."（p.40）
と明記されているので、成績が悪くても損をすることはないようです。 UC Conselor Conferenceでも、「APは一回限りのテストで、プレッシャー等でたまたまいい点が取れないことがあるのはよくわかっている。成績が1だったとしても、admissionの判断には"neutral"だ。」と言っていました。

日本語が母国語の場合SATやAPで日本語を取ることができない、またはとっても無視される、という噂があるようですが、そのような事実はないことを確認しました。

UCに入学してからもSATやAPの成績は役に立つことがあります。breadth requirementの単位として認められる可能性があります（p.40-52）。また、 college, school, majorを決める際にSATやAPの成績が大学での"Language Other Than English Requirements"に使える場合もあります（p.53-57）。

繰り返しますが、大学、学部によって事情が違うので興味のある大学それぞれについて調べてください。
